Thomas J. Manton
Thomas J. Manton (born November 3, 1932 in New York City , † July 22, 2006 ibid) was an American politician . Between 1985 and 1999 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .
Career
Thomas Manton attended St. Joseph's School in Astoria and St. John's Preparatory School in Brooklyn . From 1951 to 1953, he served in the Marine Corps during the Korean War . From 1955 to 1960 he worked for the New York Police Department. Between 1960 and 1964 he worked as a sales representative for IBM . After studying law at St. John's Law School and being admitted to the bar in 1963, he began practicing this profession. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1970 and 1984 he was a member of the New York City Council .
In the 1984 congressional elections , Manton was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the ninth constituency of New York , where he succeeded Geraldine Ferraro on January 3, 1985 . After six re-elections, he was able to complete seven legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1999 . Since 1993 he represented there as the successor of Gary Ackerman the seventh district of his state. At times he was a member of the energy committee. Also chaired a subcommittee. In 1998 he renounced another candidacy. He died of prostate cancer on July 22, 2006 in New York.
