    The Council of the City of New York ( Engl. Official: The Council of the City of New York , informal: New York City Council ) is the legislative body of the City of New York . In addition to passing resolutions on the laws of the city of New York, he is also responsible for overseeing the mayor and his administration as well as a number of other tasks, in particular assisting in the appointment of city officials.

    The New York City Council has 51 members. Each member is elected in a constituency by the local voters according to the principle of majority voting for a four-year term of office.     Presidency

    The council has established standing committees and sub-committees to deal with various matters falling within the jurisdiction of the city and the council.

    Parliamentary Interest Groups

    Some council members have come together to form parliamentary interest groups ( caucus ), which bring issues and concerns of certain population groups to the council and want to legislate in their interests. The Black, Latino and Asian (BLA) Caucus , the Progressive Caucus , the Women's Caucus , the Jewish Caucus , the LGBT Caucus and the Irish Caucus exist .

    The members of the New York City Council are professional politicians . The basic compensation for each member is 148,500 US dollars per year. Additional compensation is paid for assuming committee chairs and other council positions.
