Yvette Diane Clarke (* 21st November 1964 in New York City ) is an American politician of the Democratic Party since 2007 and member of the House of Representatives of the United States for the State of New York .

biography

Yvette Clarke was born in New York City, the daughter of Jamaican immigrants. She attended Edward R. Murrow High School , Oberlin College , Ohio, and Medgar Evers College , part of the City University of New York . She then worked in the private sector. From 2001 until her election to the US House of Representatives, she was a member of the City Council of the City of New York.

In 2006 she was elected to the House of Representatives to succeed Major Owens for New York's eleventh congressional district. The borough includes parts of Brooklyn . After five re-elections so far, she can continue to exercise her office today. Her new legislative term runs until January 3, 2019, with the option to run for another candidate in 2018. Since 2013, she has represented the ninth congressional electoral district of her state in the House of Representatives. In the House of Representatives, she was previously a member of the Committee on Education and Labor . She later became a member of the Committee on Homeland Security , the Committee on Small Business and the Committee on Trade and Energy .

Clarke is single and lives in Brooklyn. She is a member of the African Methodist Episcopal Church .
