Jacob H. De Witt
Jacob Hasbrouck De Witt (born October 2, 1784 in Marbletown , New York , † January 30, 1867 in Kingston , New York) was an American politician . Between 1819 and 1821 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .
Career
Jacob Hasbrouck De Witt was born in Marbletown about a year after the War of Independence ended. He attended village schools and the Kingston Academy . After that he worked in agriculture. He served as an adjutant during the British-American War .
As an opponent of an overly strong central government, he joined the Democratic-Republican Party founded by Thomas Jefferson at that time . In the congressional elections of 1818 for the 16th Congress , he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the seventh constituency of New York , where he succeeded Samuel Rossiter Betts on March 4, 1819 . After that he worked in agriculture again. De Witt was a supervisor in Ulster County in 1827 and 1840 . He served in the New York State Assembly in 1839 and 1847 . He died in Kingston on January 30, 1867 and was buried in Sharpe Cemetery on Albany Avenue .
