John H. McCarthy

John Henry McCarthy (born November 16, 1850 in New York City , † February 5, 1908 ) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1889 and 1891 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John Henry McCarthy was born and raised in New York City about two and a half years after the end of the Mexican-American War . He attended the De La Salle Institute , the Christian Brothers, and St. Francis Xavier College . Then he went about commercial business. He studied law . He was admitted to the bar in 1873 and then began practicing in New York City. He served in the New York State Assembly in 1880 and 1881 . Between 1882 and 1888 he was a judge ( civil justice ) in the fifth judicial district of New York City. Politically, he belonged to the Democratic Party .

In the 1888 congressional elections for the 51st Congress , McCarthy was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the eighth constituency of New York , where he succeeded Timothy J. Campbell on March 4, 1889 . He resigned from his seat on January 14, 1891, because of a judge's post.

Governor David B. Hill appointed him a magistrate in New York City District Court on January 11, 1891, to fill a vacancy. McCarthy was later elected and re-elected to the same office and served there until his death on February 5, 1908. His body was interred in Calvary Cemetery , Long Island City .
