Abraham Joseph Hasbrouck (born October 16, 1773 in Guilford , New York Province, † January 12, 1845 in Kingston , New York ) was an American politician . Between 1813 and 1815 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives . Congressman Abraham Bruyn Hasbrouck was his cousin.

Career

Abraham Joseph Hasbrouck was born and raised in Guilford about a year and a half before the outbreak of the War of Independence . During this time he received private lessons. In 1795 he moved to Kingston, where he did business. He was a co-founder of the Delaware and Hudson Canal Company . Governor Jay named him first lieutenant in the cavalry . He was the founder and director of the Middle District Bank of Kingston . In 1811 he was a member of the New York State Assembly .

As an opponent of an overly strong central government, he joined the Democratic-Republican Party founded by Thomas Jefferson at that time . In the congressional elections of 1812 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the seventh constituency of New York , where he succeeded Harmanus Bleecker on March 4, 1813 .
