Harmanus Bleecker (born October 9, 1779 in Albany , New York , † July 19, 1849 there ) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1811 and 1813 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Harmanus Bleecker was born and raised in Albany during the War of Independence . He studied law . He was admitted to the bar in 1801 and then began practicing in Albany.

Politically he belonged to the Federalist Party . In the congressional elections of 1810 Bleecker was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the seventh constituency of New York , where he succeeded Killian Van Rensselaer on March 4, 1811 . Since he on a run again in 1812 renounced, he left the after 3 March 1813 Congress of.

He then resumed his practice as a lawyer in Albany. He was a member of the New York State Assembly in 1814 and 1815 . Between 1822 and 1834 he was regent at the University of the State of New York . On May 12, 1837, he became diplomatic chargé d'Affaires in the Netherlands - a position he held until June 28, 1842. After that he retired from public life as well as his business activities. He died on July 19, 1849 in Albany and was buried there in the Rural Cemetery .
