James J. Walsh (1896)

James Joseph Walsh (born May 22, 1858 in New York City , † May 8, 1909 ) was an American lawyer and politician . He represented New York State in the US House of Representatives in 1895 and 1896 .

Life

James Joseph Walsh was born and raised in New York City about three years before the outbreak of the Civil War . During this time he attended public schools and St. James' Parochial School . He graduated from Manhattan College in 1877 and from Columbia University's law school in 1879 . He was admitted to the bar in 1880 and then began practicing in New York City. Between 1889 and 1894 he was school inspector at community schools. Politically, he belonged to the Democratic Party .

In the 1894 congressional election for the 54th Congress , Walsh was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the eighth constituency of New York , where he succeeded Edward J. Dunphy on March 4, 1895 . However, his choice was successfully challenged by John M. Mitchell because of a formal error in the registration. After his time at Congress, he resumed his practice as a lawyer. In 1905 he became a magistrate ( city magistrate appointed) - a position which he held until his death on May 8, 1809 in New York City. His body was interred in Calvary Cemetery in Long Island City .
