Long Island City

Long Iceland City ( LIC ) is the westernmost district (neighborhood) in New York City district ( borough ) Queens . It's on the East River across from Manhattan. The district is known for its growth and gentrification. It is connected to Manhattan by the Queensboro Bridge .

history

Long Island City, was founded as an independent city in 1870. It emerged from the merger of Village, Astoria, Ravenswood, Hunters Point, Blissville, Sunnyside, Dutch Kills , Steinway, Bowery Bay and Middleton in Newtown Township. The independence lasted until 1898. Patrick Gleason was the last mayor of the city. In 1898 it became part of the City of Greater New York .

During the 1930s, transportation routes were created to connect LIC to Manhattan: the Queens-Midtown Tunnel and the Queensboro Bridge . Many factories closed in the 1970s.

economy

  • Eagle Electric , now Cooper Wiring Devices, was one of the largest companies in the city before moving to China. Today there are luxury apartments on the former company premises
  • Long Iceland City is now home to the largest Glückskeksfabrik the US, the company Wonton Foods is operated
  • The Brooks Brothers fashion company produces ties in LIC.
  • Long Island City is home to the Troma independent film studio .
  • Amazon announced in November 2018 that it was planning another headquarters in Long Island City.

Demographics

A 2010 statistical survey was conducted: Long Island City has 1% Native Americans, 10% African American, 15% Asian, 52% white, 9% mixed race, and 15% others
