William Murray

William Murray (born October 1, 1803 in Middletown , New York , † August 25, 1875 in Goshen , New York) was an American politician . Between 1851 and 1855 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives . Congressman Ambrose Spencer Murray was his brother.

Career

William Murray was born and raised near Middletown, Orange County , in the early 19th century . During this time he attended community schools. He then worked as a clerk in commercial operations in Middletown and later in New York City . Then he went about commercial business. In 1841 he moved to Goshen.

Politically, he was a member of the Democratic Party at that time . In the congressional elections of 1850 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the ninth constituency of New York , where he succeeded Thomas McKissock on January 4, 1851 . In 1852 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in the tenth constituency of New York, where he succeeded Marius Schoonmaker on March 4, 1853 . He retired from the after March 3, 1855 Congress of.

After his time at the Congress, he worked in agriculture. In 1856 he was instrumental in founding the Republican Party and later a member of it. In 1857 he became President of Goshen Bank - a position he held in Goshen until his death on August 25, 1875. His body was then interred in St. James' Cemetery .
