Eliakim Sherrill

Eliakim Sherrill (born February 16, 1813 in Greenville , Ulster County , New York , †  July 3, 1863 in Gettysburg , Pennsylvania ) was an American officer and politician . Between 1847 and 1849 he represented the state of New York in the US House of Representatives ; later he held the rank of colonel in the Union army during the Civil War and fell at the Battle of Gettysburg .

Career

Eliakim Sherrill attended public schools in his home country. He then worked as a tanner and farmer. In his homeland he held several local offices. He was also a major in the state militia. Politically, he joined the Whig Party .

In the congressional election of 1846 , Sherrill was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the tenth constituency of New York , where he succeeded Democrat Samuel Gordon on March 4, 1847 . Until March 3, 1849, he was able to complete a legislative period in Congress . This was initially shaped by the events of the Mexican-American War . In 1854 he was a member of the New York Senate .

During the civil war, Sherrill set up an infantry regiment of volunteers in August 1862, which he himself commanded as a colonel. As a result, he took an active part in the fighting with his regiment. He was wounded in the process. In the meantime he was also a prisoner of war for a short time, from which he was soon released. In July 1863 he took part in the Battle of Gettysburg, during which he was mortally wounded.
