William Fiero Russell

William Fiero Russell (born January 14, 1812 in Saugerties , New York , † April 29, 1896 there ) was an American politician . Between 1857 and 1859 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

William Fiero Russell was born and raised in Saugerties, Ulster County , about five months before the outbreak of the British-American War . He completed his preliminary studies. Then he went about commercial as well as banking business. Russell was the founder and president of Saugerties Bank . On October 19, 1836, he became postmaster in Saugerties - a position he held until January 25, 1841. He was a member of the New York State Assembly in 1851 . Politically, he belonged to the Democratic Party .

In the congressional election of 1856 for the 35th Congress , Russell was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the eleventh constituency of New York , where he succeeded Rufus H. King on March 4, 1857 . He retired from the after March 3, 1859 Congress of.

After his time in Congress, he was appointed Naval Agent in the Port of New York City in 1859 . Then he went back to banking. In 1876 he took part as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in St. Louis . He died on April 29, 1896 in Saugerties and was then buried in Mountain View Cemetery .
