Gideon Reynolds

Gideon Reynolds (born August 9, 1813 in Petersburg , New York , † July 13, 1896 in Hoosick , New York) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1847 and 1851 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Gideon Reynolds was born and raised in Petersburg in Rensselaer County during the British-American War . During this time he attended private schools. In 1836 he moved with his father to Hoosick, where he worked in agriculture. He was a member of the New York State Assembly in 1839 . Between 1843 and 1846 he was sheriff in Rensselaer County. Politically, he was a member of the Whig Party at the time.

In the 1846 congressional elections for the 30th Congress , Reynolds was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the twelfth constituency of New York , where he succeeded Richard P. Herrick on March 4, 1847 . After a successful re-election he resigned in 1850 to run again and was eliminated from the after March 3, 1851 Congress of.

After his time in Congress, he returned to farming in Rensselaer County. In the following time he joined the Republican Party . He attended the Republican National Conventions as a delegate in 1856 and 1860 . Then he was a member of the Republican State Central Committee . On September 9, 1862, he was appointed Internal Revenue Collector for the 15th District of New York - a position he held until his resignation on March 31, 1865. About three months later the civil war ended. In 1875 he was on the Hoosick Board of Supervisors . He died there on July 13, 1896 and was then buried in the Hoosick Rural Cemetery .
