Gerrit Y. Lansing

Gerrit Yates Lansing (born August 4, 1783 in Albany , New York , † January 3, 1862 ibid) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1831 and 1837 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Gerrit Lansing was born and raised in Albany about a month before the end of the War of Independence . He pursued classical studies and graduated from Union College in Schenectady in 1800 . Lansing studied law . He was admitted to the bar in 1804 and then began practicing in Albany. In 1807 he worked as an office worker ( clerk ) in the New York State Assembly . He was then between 1816 and 1823 judge at the probate court ( Court of Probate ). In 1829 he was elected regent at the University of the State of New York - a position he held until his death. He was elected Chancellor ( chancellor ) on October 31, 1842 .

Politically, he belonged to the Jacksonian faction. In the 1830 congressional elections for the 22nd Congress , he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the tenth constituency of New York , where he succeeded Ambrose Spencer on March 4, 1831 . After two successful re-elections in 1836, he decided not to run again and resigned from Congress on March 3, 1837 .

Between 1854 and 1862 he was President of Albany Savings Bank . He became president of Albany Insurance Co. in 1859 - a position he held until 1862. He died on January 3, 1862 in Albany and was then buried in the Albany Rural Cemetery . He was the son of Abraham G. Lansing and nephew of John Lansing .
