Albert Gallup

Albert Gallup (born January 30, 1796 in East Berne , New York , † November 5, 1851 in Providence , Rhode Island ) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1837 and 1839 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Albert Gallup was born in East Berne just before the end of the 18th century. He received a modest education. Gallup was studying law . After receiving his license to practice law, he began practicing in Albany . Between 1831 and 1834 he was sheriff in Albany County . Politically, he belonged to the Democratic Party .

In the congressional elections of 1836 for the 25th Congress he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the tenth electoral district of New York , where he succeeded Gerrit Y. Lansing on March 4, 1837 . In 1838 he suffered a defeat in his re-election and resigned from Congress on March 3, 1839 .

President James K. Polk named him Albany Collector of Customs . Gallup died in Providence on November 5, 1851 and was then buried in Swan Point Cemetery .

He married on April 26, 1818 Eunice Smith (1799–1872), daughter of Priscilla Mitchell (1780–1866) and Amos Denison Smith (1778–1826). The couple had seven children together:
