Peter Sailly
Peter Sailly (born April 20, 1754 in Lorraine , France , † March 16, 1826 in Plattsburgh , New York ) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1805 and 1807 he represented the state of New York in the US House of Representatives .
Career
Peter Sailly was during the reign of Louis XVI. , King of France, was born in Lorraine and grew up there. In the final year of the War of Independence , he immigrated to the United States and settled in Plattsburgh. There he went about commercial business and worked as a fur trader . He was also active as a manufacturer of potash salt and in the shipping of construction timber. In 1788 he became associate justice at the Court of Common Pleas - a position he held until 1796. He served as Commissioner of Highways and School Commissioner in 1797 and 1798 . He then worked as a supervisor of schools in 1799 and 1800 . He was a member of the New York State Assembly in 1803 . Between 1804 and 1806 he was a judge in Clinton County .
As an opponent of an overly strong central government, he joined the Democratic-Republican Party founded by Thomas Jefferson at that time . In the congressional elections of 1804 for the 9th Congress he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the eleventh constituency of New York , where he succeeded Beriah Palmer on March 4, 1805 . After his time in Congress, he worked as a Collector of Customs in Plattsburgh from 1807 until his death . He died there on March 16, 1826 and was then buried in Riverside Cemetery .
