John De Witt Warner (born October 30, 1851 in Reading , New York , † May 27, 1925 in New York City ) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1891 and 1895 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John De Witt Warner was born on a farm in the town of Reading, Schuyler County , about three and a half years after the end of the Mexican-American War . The Warner family moved to Big Stream (later Glenora ) and in 1860 they settled in Rock Stream , Yates County . In the following time he attended the district schools and the Starkey Seminary in Eddytown . He studied and completed his preparatory studies. In 1872 he graduated from Cornell University . He gave the Ithaca Daily Leader for a few monthsout. For the next four years he worked as a professor at the Ithaca Academy and the Albany Academy . In 1876 he graduated from Albany Law School . He was admitted to the bar in the same year and began practicing in New York City in 1877. Politically, he belonged to the Democratic Party .

In the congressional elections of 1890 for the 52nd Congress , Warner was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the eleventh constituency of New York , where he succeeded John Quinn on March 4, 1891 . In 1892 he ran in the 13th constituency of New York for the 53rd Congress . After a successful election, he succeeded Ashbel P. Fitch on March 4, 1893 . After his time in Congress he went back to his practice as a lawyer in New York City. Between 1902 and 1905 he was President of the Art Commission of New York City and between 1905 and 1909 President of the American Free Trade League . He served as a special counsel in terminal work for the Dock Department in 1911 and 1912 . In 1913 he sat on the commission that revised the banking laws of New York. Warner was also active in literature. He practiced as a lawyer until his death. He died on May 27, 1925 in New York City and was buried in Rock Stream in the cemetery of the same name.
