Ransom Hooker Gillet (born January 27, 1800 in New Lebanon , New York , † October 24, 1876 in Washington, DC ) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1833 and 1837 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Ransomware Hooker Gillet was born and raised in New Lebanon, Columbia County , in the early 19th century . He pursued an academic career. Gillet studied law in Canton . After receiving his license to practice as a lawyer, he began practicing in Ogdensburg . Between 1830 and 1833 he was postmaster in Ogdensburg. As a delegate, he took part in the Democratic National Conventions in 1832 and 1840 . Politically, he belonged to the Jacksonian faction.

In the congressional election of 1832 for the 23rd Congress , Gillet was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington DC in the 14th constituency of New York, where he succeeded Samuel Beardsley on March 4, 1833 . After a successful re-election in 1836, he decided not to run again and left the congress on March 3, 1837 .

Between 1837 and 1839 he was the commissioner for the New York Indians. He was appointed to the Register of the Treasury - a position he held from April 1, 1845 to May 27, 1847. At that time he was appointed Solicitor of the Treasury . He held this post until October 31, 1849. He was Assistant Attorney General between 1855 and 1858. He was appointed solicitor at the Court of Claims , where he served between 1858 and 1861. In 1867 he withdrew from public life and devoted himself to literary work. He died on October 24, 1876 in Washington DC and was then buried in Glenwood Cemetery .
