John Edwards (politician, 1781)

John Edwards (born August 6, 1781 in Beekmans , New York , † December 28, 1850 in Johnstown , New York) was an American politician . Between 1837 and 1839 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John Edwards was born and raised in the Beekmans district of Poughkeepsie in Dutchess County during the Revolutionary War . He attended community schools. Between 1806 and 1812 he was sheriff in Montgomery County and overseer in Johnstown Jail in Fulton County . Then he settled in the Village of Ephrata . Politically, he belonged to the Democratic Party .

In the congressional elections of 1836 for the 25th Congress he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the 15th constituency of New York , where he succeeded Matthias J. Bovee on March 4, 1837 . He retired from the after March 3, 1839 Congress of.

After his time at the congress, he went about commercial business, but also worked as a manufacturer. He died on December 28, 1850 in Johnstown and was buried in the cemetery of the same name. At that point the Mexican-American War had ended for about two years.
