25th United States Congress
The 25th Congress of the United States , consisting of the House and Senate , was the legislature of the United States . Its legislative period lasted from March 4, 1837 to March 4, 1839. All members of the House of Representatives and a third of the senators ( Class III ) were elected in the 1836 congressional elections. This resulted in a majority in both chambers for the Democratic Party , which, along with Martin Van Buren, also provided the president. The Whig Party , which was represented in Congress for the first time since its inception, only had the role in the opposition. The congress met in the American capital Washington, DC At that time the United States consisted of 26 states. The distribution of seats in the House of Representatives was based on the 1830 census .

- March 4, 1837: beginning of the legislative period of the 25th Congress. At the same time, Martin Van Buren takes up his new office as US President. He replaces Andrew Jackson .
