James B. Spencer

James Bradley Spencer (born April 26, 1781 in Salisbury , Connecticut , † March 26, 1848 in Fort Covington , New York ) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1837 and 1839 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

James Bradley Spencer was born and raised in Salisbury during the Revolutionary War . During this time he received a modest education. He moved to Franklin County , where he settled in Fort Covington. During the British-American War he raised a company and served as a captain in the 29th US Infantry . In 1814 he was appointed local magistrate . He served as a guardianship and probate judge ( surrogate ) in Franklin County between 1828 and 1837 . During this time he was appointed Loan Commissioner in 1829 . He served in the New York State Assembly in 1831 and 1832 . Politically, he belonged to the Democratic Party . In the 1836 congressional election for the 25th Congress , Spencer was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington DC in the 14th constituency of New York, where he succeeded Ransom H. Gillet on March 4, 1837 . He retired from the after March 3, 1839 Congress of. He died on March 26, 1848 in Fort Covington and was then buried in the Old Cemetery .
