Joseph H. Tuthill

Joseph Hasbrouck Tuthill (born February 25, 1811 in Blooming Grove , New York , † July 27, 1877 in Ellenville , New York) was an American politician . Between 1871 and 1873 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives . Congressman Selah Tuthill was his uncle.

Career

Joseph Hasbrouck Tuthill was born and raised in Blooming Grove, Orange County about a year before the outbreak of the British-American War . The Tuthill family moved to Shawangunk , Ulster County , in 1824 . He attended community schools and private schools. Then he went about commercial business, but was also active in agriculture. He moved to New York City in 1828 and from there to Ulsterville in 1832 . During the whole time he continued to do business. In 1834 he moved to Ellenville. Tuthill served on the Ulster County's Board of Supervisors from 1842, 1843, 1861, 1862, and between 1865 and 1870 . Between 1843 and 1847 he worked as a clerk in Ulster County. He was president of the Ellenville Glass Works .

Politically, he belonged to the Democratic Party . In 1866 he ran unsuccessfully for the 40th Congress . In the 1870 congressional elections for the 42nd Congress , Tuthill was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 13th  constituency of New York , where he succeeded John Ashley Griswold on March 4, 1871 . He retired from the after March 3, 1873 Congress of.

He died on July 27, 1877 in Ellenville and was then buried in Fantinekill Cemetery near Ellenville.
