Joseph Russell (politician, 1800)

Joseph Russell (* 1800 ; † April 24, 1875 in Glens Falls , New York ) was an American politician . He represented New York State in the US House of Representatives between 1845 and 1847 and between 1851 and 1853 .

Career

Joseph Russell was born in New York in the early 19th century and then lived in Warrensburg , Warren County . He received a modest education. Russell founded Warrensburg's Masonic Lodge . He was in the lumber business but also pursued other endeavors, including a partnership with the Warren House Hotel . He was elected Town Supervisor of Warrensburg in 1830, 1835 and 1840 . He was from November 1834 to November 1837 sheriff in Warren County. In 1840 he was a member of the New York State Assembly . Politically, he belonged to the Democratic Party .

In the congressional elections of 1844 for the 29th Congress he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 15th constituency of New York , where he succeeded Lemuel Stetson on March 4, 1845 . He retired from the after March 3, 1847 Congress of. In 1850 he ran for the 32nd Congress . After a successful election, he succeeded John R. Thurman on March 3, 1851 . He left the Congress after March 3, 1853.

He later moved to Glens Falls, where he founded the First National Bank of Glens Falls . He also worked at the Glens Falls Masonic Lodge . He died on March 24, 1875 in Glens Falls.
