John L. Schoolcraft

John Lawrence Schoolcraft (* 1804 in Albany , New York , † July 7, 1860 in St. Catharines , Canada ) was an American politician . Between 1849 and 1853 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John Lawrence Schoolcraft was born and raised in Albany in the early 19th century. He received a modest education. Then he went about commercial business. Politically, he was a member of the Whig Party at the time. In the 1848 congressional elections for the 31st Congress , he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the 13th  constituency of New York , where he succeeded John I. Slingerland on March 4, 1849 . After a successful re-election he resigned in 1852 to run again and was eliminated from the after March 3, 1853 Congress of. After his time in Congress, he was elected President of Commercial Bank in Albany and held that post from 1854 until his death. He joined the Republican Party . As a delegate, he took part in the Republican National Convention in Chicago in 1860 . He died on July 7, 1860 on the way back home in St. Catharines and was then buried in the Rural Cemetery in Albany.

His house in Guilderland , known as the John Schoolcraft House , was added to the National Register of Historic Places on November 10, 1982 .
