Jefferson Monroe Levy (born April 16, 1852 in New York City , †  March 6, 1924 there ) was an American politician . Between 1899 and 1915 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives twice .

Career

Jefferson Levy attended both public and private schools. After a subsequent law degree at the Law School of New York University and his admission as a lawyer in 1873, he began to work in this profession in New York City. In 1879 he took over the management of Monticello , the former estate of President Thomas Jefferson, who died in 1826 . This property had been acquired by his uncle Uriah P. Levy in 1834 and remained in the hands of the Levy family until 1923, except during the Civil War , when it was acquired by the Thomas Jefferson Foundation . Jefferson Levy invested a lot of money in maintaining this property. Politically, he joined the Democratic Party .

In the congressional elections of 1898 Levy was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 13th  constituency of New York , where he succeeded Republican Richard C. Shannon on March 4, 1899 . Since he renounced another candidacy in 1900, he was initially only able to complete one legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1901 .

After the temporary end of his time in the US House of Representatives, Levy practiced again as a lawyer. He has also worked in the real estate and stocks business. In the elections of 1910 he was re-elected to Congress in the 13th district of his state, where he replaced Herbert Parsons on March 4, 1911 . After being re-elected in the 14th district, he was able to spend two more legislative terms there until March 3, 1915. While in Congress, the 16th and 17th amendments were ratified. In 1914 he renounced another candidacy.

After his final resignation from the US House of Representatives, Levy returned to practice as a lawyer. He died on March 6, 1924 in New York City.
