William I. Sirovich

William Irving Sirovich (born March 18, 1882 in York , Pennsylvania , † December 17, 1939 in New York City ) was an American doctor and politician . Between 1927 and 1939 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

William Irving Sirovich was born in York about two months before the Chinese Exclusion Act was passed . The Sirovich family settled in New York City in 1888. There he attended public schools. Sirovich graduated from College of the City of New York (now New York University ) and from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York City in 1906 . In 1906 he began practicing as a doctor in New York City. He also worked as a lecturer, editor, and playwright - some of his plays have been performed on Broadway . Between 1906 and 1926 he was a member of the Fifth District School Board . In 1913 he was appointed to the commission that investigated widows' pensions and the state pension commission. The following year he was a member of the State Charities Convention . Between 1910 and 1927 he held the position as superintendent at Peoples Hospital in New York City. In 1924 he ran unsuccessfully for the 69th Congress . Politically, he belonged to the Democratic Party . In the 1926 congressional election , he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the 14th  constituency of New York , where he succeeded Nathan David Perlman . He was re-elected six times in a row, but died during his final term. As a congressman, he chaired the Committee on Patents ( 72nd to 76th Congress ).

Between 1929 and 1932 he was President of the Industrial National Bank in New York City. In 1931 he took part as a delegate at the Interparliamentary Union Congress in Bucharest ( Romania ). He died on December 17, 1939 in New York City and was then buried in Mount Hebron Cemetery in Flushing .
