Peter Swart
Peter Swart (born July 5, 1752 in Schoharie , New York Province, † November 3, 1829 ibid) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1807 and 1809 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .
Career
Peter Swart grew up during the British colonial era. He attended community schools. Swart studied law , got his license to practice law , and then began practicing in Schoharie. In 1795 he was a judge on the Court of Common Pleas in Schoharie County . He served in the New York State Assembly in 1798 and 1799 .
As an opponent of an overly strong central government, he joined the Democratic-Republican Party founded by Thomas Jefferson at that time . In the congressional election of 1806 for the 10th Congress he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 13th constituency of New York , where he succeeded Thomas Sammons on March 4, 1807 . In 1810 and 1813 he was sheriff in Schoharie County. Between 1817 and 1820 he was a member of the New York Senate . Then he went back to his work as a lawyer in Schoharie. He died there on November 3, 1829 and was buried in the Old Stone Fort Cemetery .
