10th United States Congress
The 10th Congress of the United States , consisting of the House and Senate , was the legislature of the United States . Its legislative period lasted from March 4, 1807 to March 4, 1809. All members of the House of Representatives and a third of the senators ( Class III ) were elected in 1806 in the congressional elections. The result was an overwhelming majority for the Democratic-Republican Party in both chambers . The congress met in the American capital Washington, DC At that time the United States consisted of 17 states. President was Thomas Jefferson. The distribution of seats in the House of Representatives was based on the 1800 census .
Important events
- March 4, 1807: beginning of the legislative period of the 10th Congress
- May 22, 1807: Former Vice President Aaron Burr is charged with high treason. He is acquitted on September 1st.
- August 17, 1807: Robert Fulton's steamship Clermont sails from New York City on the Hudson River to Albany . With this voyage, commercial steam shipping begins worldwide.
- January 1, 1808: The import of slaves into the United States is banned.
- In the presidential election of 1808 , James Madison is elected as the new president. He takes office on March 4, 1809.
- 1808: The Democratic Republican Party defends its majority in both chambers in the congressional elections.
- February 3, 1809: Illinois Territory founded .
