Reuben Humphrey

Reuben Humphrey (born September 2, 1757 in West Simsbury , Colony of Connecticut , † August 12, 1831 at Marcellus , New York ) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1807 and 1809 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Reuben Humphrey was born and raised in West Simsbury, Hartford County , during the British colonial era . He studied and completed his preparatory studies. During the War of Independence , he signed up as a private and was later retired as a captain . Humphrey held several local offices. He was a warden at Newgate State Prison in Simsbury for five years . In 1801 he lived with Marcellus in Onondaga County . There he was First County Judge between 1804 and 1807 .

As an opponent of an overly strong central government, he joined the Democratic-Republican Party founded by Thomas Jefferson at that time . In the congressional election of 1806 for the 10th Congress , he was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 16th electoral district of New York , where he succeeded Uri Tracy on March 4, 1807 .
