Cornelius Amory Pugsley (born July 17, 1850 in Peekskill , New York , † September 10, 1936 there ) was an American politician . Between 1901 and 1903 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Cornelius Amory Pugsley was born and raised in Peekskill, Westchester County , about two years after the end of the Mexican-American War . During this time he attended public schools and received a higher education through a private tutor. Between 1867 and 1870 he worked as a clerk and assistant postmaster . He went into banking in 1870 and was President of the Board of Trustees at the Peekskill Military Academy .

Politically, he belonged to the Democratic Party . In the 1900 congressional election for the 57th Congress , Pugsley was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the 16th electoral district of New York , where he succeeded John Q. Underhill on March 4, 1901 . In 1902 he suffered a defeat in his re-election and resigned from Congress on March 3, 1903 .

After his time in Congress, he went back to banking in Peekskill. He was President General of the Sons of the American Revolution in 1906 and 1907 . In 1908 he took part as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention . He was President of the New York State Bankers' Association in 1913 and President of Westchester County National Bank in Peekskill. Then he was on the Westchester County Park Commission . He died on September 10, 1936 in Peekskill. His body was then interred in Raymond Hill Cemetery in Carmel .
