Isaac H. Bronson

Isaac Hopkins Bronson (born October 16, 1802 in Rutland , New York , † August 13, 1855 in Palatka , Florida ) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1837 and 1839 he represented the state of New York in the US House of Representatives ; later he became a federal judge .

Career

Isaac Hopkins Bronson was born in Rutland in the early 19th century. He attended public schools. Then he studied law . He was admitted to the bar in 1822 and then began practicing in Watertown , Jefferson County . Politically, he belonged to the Democratic Party .

In the 1836 congressional elections for the 25th Congress , Bronson was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 18th electoral district of New York , where he succeeded Daniel Wardwell on March 4, 1837 . In 1838 he suffered a defeat in his re-election and resigned from Congress on March 3, 1839 . As a congressman, he chaired the Committee on Territories .

On April 18, 1838, he was appointed a judge in the Fifth Judicial District of New York. He moved to St. Augustine , Florida and a few years later to Palatka, Putnam County . He was appointed federal judge for the eastern district of Florida on March 14, 1840. After Florida became a state in the United States in 1845, he was unanimously elected judge for the eastern district. On August 8, 1846, he was appointed judge in the federal district court for the Florida district. When the state was later divided up, he was given the office of judge in the northern district - a position he held until his death in Palatka. He died on August 13, 1855 and was buried in the Episcopal Church Cemetery . His seat fell to McQueen McIntosh .
