Samuel Shaw

Samuel Shaw (born December 1768 in Dighton , Bristol County , Province of Massachusetts Bay , † October 23, 1827 in Clarendon Springs , Vermont ) was an American politician . Between 1808 and 1813 he represented the first constituency of the state of Vermont in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Samuel Shaw received limited schooling and then moved to Putney , Vermont. After studying medicine, he began practicing as a doctor in Castleton from 1789 . Politically, Shaw joined the Democratic Republican Party founded by Thomas Jefferson . Between 1800 and 1807 he was an MP in the Vermont House of Representatives .

After the resignation of Congressman James Witherell , Samuel Shaw won the by-elections in the first district of Vermont. This allowed him to exercise his mandate in Congress from September 6, 1808 . After he was confirmed in office in the regular congressional elections in 1808 and 1810, Samuel Shaw could remain in Congress until March 3, 1813. After his tenure in the House of Representatives in Washington, DC , Shaw served as a military doctor in the US Army between 1813 and 1818 .

Samuel Shaw died in October 1827 and was buried in Castleton. His son Henry (1788-1857) represented the State of Massachusetts in the US House of Representatives between 1817 and 1821.
