Peter F. Welch (born May 2, 1947 in Springfield , Massachusetts ) is an American politician . Since 2007 he has represented the state of Vermont in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Peter Welch attended Cathedral High School in his native Springfield. He then studied until 1969 at the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester . With a law degree at the University of California at Berkeley , he finished his studies in 1973. He then started working as a lawyer in a private law firm.

Politically, Welch became a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1981 and 1989 and again from 2002 to 2007 he was a member of the Vermont Senate . From 1983 to 1985 he was the parliamentary group leader of the Democratic Senators and between 1985 and 1989 and from 2003 to 2007 he was the incumbent president of this body. In 1988 he ran unsuccessfully for membership in the US House of Representatives.

In the 2006 congressional elections , Welch was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC . There he took over from Bernie Sanders on January 3, 2007 . As he was re-elected in all subsequent elections, including the one in 2016, he can continue to exercise his mandate today. His latest legislative term runs until January 3, 2019. He is or was a member of two congressional committees ( Committee on Energy and Commerce (including four subcommittees) and the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform . Previously, he was also a member of the Committee on Standards of Official Contacts ). Peter Welch is considered liberal. He was against the Iraq war from the start and advocates action against global warming . He also campaigns for agriculture in his home state of Vermont and calls for better financial support for war veterans. In the 2008 presidential election , he supported Barack Obama from the start . In 2016 he supported his predecessor in the House of Representatives and current US Senator Bernie Sanders in the presidential election.

Peter Welch is married to Margaret Cheney after the death of his first wife, Joan Smith. He lives privately in Hartland , Windsor County , Vermont.
