history

The town was proclaimed for settlement on July 10, 1761 under the name Hertford by Benning Wentworth as part of his New Hampshire Grants and, in contrast to many other areas from these grants, was confirmed by New York in 1767, so it was never disputed. The first settlement of this area is documented for 1763, the first town assembly for 1767. On June 15, 1782, the original name of the town was changed to Hartland to avoid confusion with the neighboring town of Hartford, which is almost identical .

Since 1848 Hartland has been connected to the Windsor – Burlington railway , which runs through the Connecticut Valley and connects Canada with the metropolises of the east coast. An originally existing passenger station has now been closed again; in neighboring Windsor , however, there is a connection to a daily express train to the Atlantic coast.
