Stockbridge is a town in Windsor County , Vermont , United States with 736 inhabitants (according to the 2010 census).

Geographical location
Stockbridge is in northwest Windsor County. The White River flows through the town of Rochester coming from the west in a west-east direction. The town is crossed by various rivers, most of which flow into the White River.

The mean average temperature in Stockbridge ranges from −7.8 ° C (18 ° F ) in January to 20.5 ° C (69 ° F) in July. history
Benning Wentworth founded the town on July 21, 1761 as part of the New Hampshire Grants . The grant was split into 31 parts and went to William Dodge and his partners. Settlement of the town began in 1784. The soil was fertile and the trunks of the pines were used by the Royal Navy for the masts of the ships. A grist mill was built in 1786, followed by a sawmill later. Erected in the area of "The Narrows", which was later renamed Gaysville after the local Gay family. Gaysville developed into a production site on the White River.
Shops, including a button shop, various mills operated by the hydropower of the White River, schools, churches and a snowshoe shop were set up in Gaysville. Another settlement area was the Stockbridge Village with shops, school, sawmill, church and tannery. Stockbridge's maximum population of 1327 was reached in 1850.
Stockbridge was badly damaged by the New England hurricane in 1927. Bridges, dams, mills, houses and the railway line were destroyed by the floods. The area of the town on the White River was again badly hit and damaged by Hurricane Irene in 2011.

Economy and Infrastructure

The Vermont State Route 100 crosses the town in the northwest and runs along the White River. At the confluence of two arms of the White River, Vermont State Route 107 joins State Route 100. State Route 107 runs downstream east along the White River and leads to Bethel.
The White River Railroad stopped in Stockbridge on its route from Bethel to Rochester, but its operation was discontinued in 1934. Today the nearest Amtrak station is in Killington.

The Gifford Medical centerr in Randolph is the closest hospital for Stockbridge.
The Belcher Library in Village Gaysville is named after William C. Belcher, who was born in Gaysville in 1820. Belcher was an associate at Norwich Military University, a doctor, lawyer, and judge. He was also a well-trained amateur botanist who could read five languages. When he died at the age of 74, he bequeathed his book collection to the Village Gaysville. An additional $ 10,000 to buy more books. The library was initially in a room in the JA Chedel & Co store, after which it moved to a neighboring house. In 1944 she moved into the house of the Gay family, which the family made available as a gift.
education
Stockbridge is part of the White River Valley Supervisory Union. Stockbridge Central School has classes from pre-school and kindergarten through 6th grade and approximately 70 students attend the school.
