history
Sharon was founded on August 17, 1761 as one of the New Hampshire Grants by Benning Wentworth . The grand went to John Taylor and 62 other settlers. The first town meeting took place on November 30, 1761 in Plainfield. The survey work was carried out by Joshua Dunlap and in the spring of 1763 the first cultivation areas were created. In 1764 the town was placed under the jurisdiction of the Province of New York and was part of the former Cumberland County . When Cumberland County was divided in 1772, the towns north of Sharon came to Gloucester County, and the people of Sharon thought they would be in that county too. The mistake cleared when the Vermont Republic was founded in 1777 . When Cumberland County was divided in 1781, Sharon remained in the newly formed Windsor County.
Sharon was attacked alongside Royalton and Tunbridge in the Royalton Raid on October 16, 1780 by a group of 300 Mohawk warriors led by Lieutenant Houghton of the British Army. The settlements along the White River were burned down. Two residents of Sharon were deported to Canada.
Joseph Smith , founder of Latter-day Saints and Prophet of Mormonism , was born in 1805 in Sharon.
During the New England Hurricane in 1827, Sharon was badly damaged by the floods of the White River.
