history
Rochester was founded on July 30, 1781 as a grant from the Vermont Republic on territory not yet settled by the New Hampshire Grants . The name goes back to Rochester in Massachusetts, from where many of the first settlers came. The grant went to Dudley Chase and Asa Witcomb and 63 others. The first settlers settled in the winter of 1781/1782. By dividing the former town of Philadelphia between the towns of Goshen and Rochester, Rochester got an area on Philadelphia Peak in the heights of the Green Mountains, surrounded by the towns of Addison County . This makes Rochester the largest town in Windsor County.
The former White River Railroad connected Rochester with Bethel.
