Chittenden is a town in Rutland County , Vermont , United States with a population of 1,258 (2010 census).

geography

Geographical location

Chittenden is mainly in the western reaches of the Green Mountains ; only small parts of the west of the town are formed by the plain around Lake Champlain . Because the Town area encompasses part of the main western Green Mountains range, some of Vermont's tallest mountains can be found here. These include in particular the Bloodroot Mountain (1061 m), Mount Carmel (1027 m) and The Cape (800 m).

The mountains are also where a large Vermont reservoir, the Chittenden Reservoir , is found. It has several inlets (especially Green Brook and Hewitt Brook), but only one outlet: the East Brook , regulated by the Chittenden Dam , a low embankment , which flows into the Otter Creek - which does not go through the Chittenden area .

The main settlements in the village are Chittenden Village and North Chittenden , both to the west of the town.

climate

The mean mean temperature in Chittenden is between -7.2 ° C (19 ° Fahrenheit ) in January and 20.6 ° C (69 ° Fahrenheit) in July. This means that the place is around 9 degrees cooler than the long-term average in the USA. The snowfall between mid-October and mid-May is more than two meters, about twice as high as the average snow depth in the USA. The daily sunshine duration is at the lower end of the range of values in the USA, between September and mid-December it is even significantly lower.

history

Due to its location in the mountains, which lacked good arable land, Chittenden was left out in the first large wave of settlement. The first settlement began only after the end of the War of Independence . On March 14, 1780, the Vermont Republic Congress proclaimed the area for sale (Grant) and two days later, on March 16, it was sold to a group of interested parties (Charter).

Early iron and manganese ore finds attracted settlers. The first forge was built in 1792, but most of the iron ore mined - up to 600 tons per year - was processed in the blast furnaces in neighboring Pittsford. In 1839, however, a blast furnace was also built in Chittenden, which produced up to 500 pounds (about 225 kg) of bar iron per day.

The area of the town was increased again when on November 2, 1816 the southern part of the dissolved town of Philadelphia Chittenden was struck.

Due to its location, Chittenden was not connected to the railway lines that crossed the mountains from 1849 and connected Vermont to the metropolises on the east coast and the developing centers on the Great Lakes in the west. Since the ore supplies were also running out or their mining became unprofitable, but no meaningful agriculture was possible in the mountains, many residents emigrated again from 1880 onwards.

The construction of the Chittenden Reservoir and the establishment of the Green Mountain National Forest did not bring any additional tourists to the village, because the commonly used access to this area is via the more easily accessible Rutland; In addition, the shores of the lake cannot be built on because both the lake itself and the surrounding forest area have been established as landscape protection areas. Since the mid-1960s, however, the mountain slopes on the western edge of the Mountains have been increasingly used as residential areas for commuters to the surrounding centers of Rutland and Brandon.

Religions

The early religious groups established were the Methodists , the Congregationalists, and the largest group, the Catholics . A first meeting house was built by the Methodists in 1832, and the Congregationalists followed a year later.

Today there are several denominations in Chittenden: on the one hand the Catholic parish of St. Robert , the Methodist parish Church Of The Wildwood and the North Chittenden Wesleyan Church in North Chittenden.
