Geographical location

Pittsford is in the central north of Rutland County, in the Green Mountains . The area of ​​the town is interspersed with hills and valleys. The Otter Creek flows centrally through the area of ​​the town in a northerly direction and there are various other rivers. The river valley of the Otter Creek is very spacious and extremely fertile.

history

Pittsford was founded on October 12, 1761 as a Grant by Benning Wentworth . The name goes back to the first fort on Otter Creek and to William Pitt , Prime Minister of the United Kingdom . Ephraim Doolittle and 60 other settlers received the grant. Settlement began in 1769 and the early documents about the town were lost due to a fire.

Sawmills, grain mills, tanneries, blacksmiths, and schools all developed along the Creek River in Pittsford Village. The Granger family built iron foundries in Grangervill from 1795. Many of the workers in the foundries were from Ireland.

Two forts were built in Pittsford during the Revolutionary War , Fort Mott in 1777 and Fort Vengeance from 1780 to 1781. Pittsford was one of the frontline cities in the Revolutionary War.

After the war, French-Canadian farmers moved to the town in 1812. The hilly country was suitable for sheep breeding and the Spanish merino sheep was introduced. The wool industry moved in and wool mills were built. After the fall of sheep farming, the dairy industry became more important and two dairies were founded. In addition, several small marble quarries were opened in Florence at the beginning of the 19th century. More immigrants from many European and Scandinavian countries reached Florence and worked in the marble quarries for the Vermont Marble Company. From 1898 to 1902 the Florence Mill was built, with which marble blocks were sawn. The transport took place with the Clarendon and Pittsford Railroad , which belonged to the Vermont Marble Company.

Religions

In Pittsford the Methodists , Baptists, and the Congregational Church planted churches. The Baptist Congregation received its first priest in 1784 and the Congregational Church in 1785.

The US Highway 7 runs in a north-south direction centrally through the Town, from Brandon to Rutland and follows the course of the Creek Rivers. Also following the course of the Bellows Falls – Burlington railway runs through the town with a train station in Pittsford.

There is no hospital of its own in Pittsford. The closest hospital is the Rutland Regional Medical Center in Rutland.

education

Pittsford is part of the Rutland Northeast Supervisory Union with Brandon, Chittenden, Goshen Leicester, Mendon, Sudbury and Whiting .

There is a school in Pittsford called Lothrop Elementary School . About 235 children attend classes from pre-kindergarten through 6th grade. The Lothrop School was founded in 1912.

Maclure Library in Pittsford

The Maclure Library was founded in 1797. Named after William Maclure who made a large donation to the library in 1839. It was housed in different rooms and buildings until 1895, when Henry Walker had a building erected for the library in memory of his brother Stephen Walker. The library has around 100 very rare books that are not in the National Archives. These include Union and Confederate Navy records during the Civil War and correspondence from the Presidents of the United States from 1789 to 1987. The Maclure Library donated these books to the National Archives.
