Danby is in the south of Rutland County, in the Green Mountains . The area of ​​the town is interspersed with hills and valleys. The Otter Creek flows on the eastern edge of the area of ​​the town in a northerly direction and several streams flow through the town. The largest body of water is Danby Pond, centrally located in the town. The Dorset Peak is the highest point in the area of ​​the town with 1149 m. To the west are the Clarendon Caves . The Morris Cave in Danby is the fourth largest cave in New England.

Danby was founded on August 27, 1761 as a Grant by Benning Wentworth . Settlement began in 1765, and the settlers came from Great Nine Partners Patent , a grant in Dutchess County , New York from 1697, from New York Governor Benjamin Fletcher . The first city assembly took place on March 14, 1769. First the area around Danby Four Corners was settled, then Danby Borough followed . Initially there were only a few mills in the town, as the waters flowing through them are not particularly large. A flour mill was missing for a long time.

There are large marble quarries in Danby . The marble has been quarried since 1827. The first marble sawmill was built in 1840 and in 1850 more than 600 workers found work in the marble quarries and production facilities. Most of them came from Italy and Poland. In 1851 Danby was connected to the Rutland – Hoosick Junction railway . Mainly to be able to transport the marble from Danby.
