Wells is in southwest Rutland County, in the Green Mountains . Wells was founded on September 15, 1761 as a Grant by Benning Wentworth . Eliakim Hall and 63 other settlers received the grant. The first settler was Ogden Mallary in 1768. In 1773 the town organized itself. The town was named after Wells in Somerset .

In 1784 Wells gave up land for the founding of Middletown Springs, and in 1798 Wells gave up land again when Pultney was founded.

Religions

Episcopal , Methodist, and Universalist congregations were established in Wells .

education

Wells is part of the Rutland Southwest Supervisory Union . Wells is home to the Wells Village School with classes from pre-kindergarten through 6th grade.

The Wells Village Library is located on Vermont Rout 30 in the former Universalist Church. The building was erected in 1855. Wells' first library was the Wells-Lochlea Library, in a room above Annie R. Huyck's garage. She also donated her books to the library and took care of the possibility of using the former church. She then paid for the church to be converted into a library. Today the library keeps her memory.
