history
Middletown Springs, initially still Middletown , was founded on October 28, 1784 when areas of the towns of Tinmouth, Wells, Poultney and Ira were combined into a new town. The name came from the fact: Middletown . It was changed to Middletown Springs in 1884 .
As early as February 1784, 50 settlers from the four towns founded an initiative to found their own separate town. Their rationale was that the surrounding mountains were too difficult to traverse so that they could not attend the community meetings and services of the towns they were actually part of. The surveyor Joseph Spaulding was commissioned with the survey, and since everyone involved was very satisfied with his work, Spaulding was allowed to choose the name of the new town. Having moved from Middletown , Spaulding chose this name, especially since he thought it was very appropriate.
The mineral springs on the banks of the Poultney River were already known to the indigenous Indians and the people of Middletown came to appreciate them too. After these sources they finally named the town Middletown Springs in 1884. The mineral springs were buried under tons of rock during a great flood in 1811 when the river bed shifted. Only another flood in 1868 pushed the river back into the old bed and exposed the mineral springs again. This made Middletown Springs a popular spa in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Another settlement in the area of the town was Burnham Hallow , no longer visible on modern maps today. It formed around John Burnham's sawmill and forge. The flood in 1811 destroyed the sawmill, the forge and the settlement along with the springs.
Religions
The Methodist , Baptist, and Congregational denominations had parishes in Middletown early on. The Congregational Church was established in 1794, the Babtist Church in 1806, and the Methodist Church in 1837. There is also a Catholic Church in Middletown Springs.
