Pawlet is in southwest Rutland County, in the Green Mountains . The area of ​​the town is interspersed with hills and valleys. The Mettawee River drains the town in a north-westerly direction with its tributaries. The highest point in the area of ​​the town is Haystack Mountain with a height of 567 m.

history

Pawlet was founded on August 26, 1761 as a Grant by Benning Wentworth . Jonathan Willard received the grant along with 76 other settlers. Initially, however, only a few families settled there due to emerging acts of war. In 1770, nine families lived in the town's area. Willard subsequently bought land from other grant recipients until he owned about two-thirds of the town's area. The other third belonged to Simeon Burton and William Fairfield, who settled in Pawlet as early as 1762. The first town assembly was held in 1769 and Simeon Burton was Pawlet's first town cleark. After the war, many former soldiers settled here.

Religions

In 1781 the Congregationalist Congregation was founded and in 1797 they built the first church. The Baptist Congregation was founded in 1791 and in 1800 the congregation built a church. Other religious communities represented in Pawlet are the Methodists , Episcopals and the Universalists . Today there is also a congregation of the United Church of Christ and the Roman Catholic Church .
