history

West Rutland emerged from the Village West Rutland , the only village west of the Otter Creek, the Town Rutland. Rutland was founded in 1761 by Benning Wentworth .

Marble quarry in West Rutland

After it was discovered in the 1830s that West Hill was made of high quality marble and that mining and transport to customers were significantly improved by the development of a railroad in 1851, more than 20 marble quarries settled in the Village West Rutland. The marble industry became the economic base of West Rutland. At the end of the 1880s, residents became increasingly dissatisfied with Rutland's political administration and on November 19, 1886, West Rutland was separated from Rutland and the independent town of West Rutland was established. The first city assembly took place on March 1, 1887. In 1909 West Rutland's Town Hall was built.

A horse-drawn tram started operating in 1886. The routes ran along Main Street and Marble Street. The cars were converted to electric drive in the 1890s and later the route was extended to Castleton Lake, Fair Haven and Poultney. The routes were abandoned in 1924 when more and more cars were used.

West Rutland High School

After a fire in 1891, a fire department was established. A major fire destroyed many buildings on Marbel Street in 1903. In 1928, another major fire destroyed the Elementary School on Main Street. The building was rebuilt in 1929 and expanded into a school with elementary and high school classes.

The marble industry developed a wetland in West Rutland. The water and sand used to polish the marble blocks sanded up a small stream and it expanded into a swampy wetland.

Religions

When the independent town of West Rutland was founded in 1886, there were six parishes in the town area, four Protestant and two Catholic parishes.
