history

Mendon was founded on February 23, 1781 by Thomas Chittenden, initially under the name Medway . The grant went to Joseph Bowker and 43 other settlers.

After an additional area called Parkers Gore was added to the Medway area in 1804 , the name was changed to Parkerstown . Allegedly, the purchase of the land went back to a ruse by Jonathan Parker, who, together with the High Sheriff, a friend, planned the purchase of the land at a time when no other bidder was present and he could thus buy the land at the declared nominal price. In 1827 the name changed again and since then the town has been called Mendon . The reason for the name change is unknown, but many of the early settlers were from Mendon , Massachusetts .

The Towm was formally organized in 1806 and the first inhabitants lived from agriculture and timber industry. Sawmills, a tannery and other mills were established. There were eight school districts in Mendon in 1868, each with its own school building. The town had its highest population in 1880 with 629 inhabitants, but this fell to 151 in 1930. Most moved to Rutland City to find better living conditions in a big city. The population has only increased since the 50s of the 19th century, this is due to the growing ski industry.

Religions

The first priest of a faith moved to Mendon in 1818 for the Methodist Church . A year later the Baptists organized a church in Mendon and in 1836 the Union Evangelical Society .
