Geographical location

Mount Holly is located in southeast Rutland County, in the Green Mountains . The area of ​​the town is interspersed with hills and valleys. The Mill River , a tributary of the Otter Creek , rises on the northern edge of the Green Mountains National Forest, which runs through the southwest of the town and drains the area of ​​the town with its tributaries flowing westwards. The Brook Branch drains eastwards with its tributaries. There are several lakes in the area of ​​the town. Among them Lake Ninevah in the northeast and the centrally located Star Lake. To the east is the Okemo State Forest with the ski areas, the slopes of which lead east from 1019 m high Okemo Mountain to Ludlow.

history

Mount Holly was founded on October 31, 1792, from an area of ​​land between Wallingford and Ludlow that was not previously allocated. Part of the area was named Jackson Gore after Abraham Jackson, one of the first settlers, but that part belonged to Wallingford. The settlement started in 1781 with a grant to Abraham Jackson and 29 other settlers. The first settlers came from Connecticut , Rhode Island and Massachusetts . The first city assembly took place in Rutland.

Ten years later, residents of the Jackson Gore area, along with a few neighbors from Wallingford and Ludlow, petitioned the legislature to establish their own town. From these areas the town of Mount Holly was founded in 1792. The origin of the name has not been passed down. It could go back to the early Quaker settlement.

There are several villages in the area of ​​the town. Belmont is centrally located, and there are Bowlsville, Goodellville, Healdville, Hortonville and Tarbellville. A location between Healdville and the Village Mount Holy is Summit, also called Summit Station. This is where the last nail of the railway line connecting Burlington and Boston was driven.

Religions

Quakers , Methodists , Baptists and the Congregational Church were founded early on in Mount Holly .

The Vermont State Route 103 extends in the east-west direction centrally through the Town from Ludlow by Clarendon. The course of the Mill River follows the Vermont State Route 155 centrally through Mount Hallow. The Bellows Falls – Burlington railway line runs mostly parallel to State Route 103 .

Mount Holly does not have its own hospital. The closest hospital is the Rutland Regional Medical Center in Rutland.

education

Mount Holly belongs to the Two Rivers Supervisory Union with Andover, Baltimore, Cavendish, Chester, Ludlow and Plymouth . There is one school in Mount Holly, the Mount Holly School, with classes from pre-kindergarten through 6th grade.

The Mount Holly Town Library is located near Star Lake in Belmont. The library was founded in 1914. At the time, CW Parmenter donated 277 books. The building in which the library is located was built as a Methodist Church in 1884 and in 1923 the building was given to the town of Mount Holly as a town hall and library. It has been used exclusively as a library since 1988 and was renovated in 2008.
