Poultney is a village in the town of Poultney in Rutland County of the state of Vermont in the United States with 1612 inhabitants (according to the 2010 census). Poultney is to the west of the town of Poultney on which it is politically and administratively dependent. Vermont State Route 30 , Vermont State Route 31 and Vermont State Route 140 run in the center of the village . The Green Mountain College campus is located on the western border of the village. The village is bounded by the Poultney River to the south and west.

Poultney was founded on September 21, 1761 as a Grant by Benning Wentworth . The most important settlements were West Poultney , later provided with independent rights as Village Poultney and East Poultney . The growth was favored by the favorable location, about halfway the two-day journey between Burlington and Albany . Here an overnight stay and a change of horses offered itself and so a restaurant was built at the beginning of the 19th century, which made this possible. Later the private State Route 30 was built, which led other travelers through Poultney.

The settlement of the Troy Conference Academy , now known as Green Mountain College , brought many students and their teachers to Poultney. The settlement was made possible because the residents supported it with a payment of 6,000 dollars and later the construction of the United Methodist Church. The school was renamed Ripley Female College in 1863 as the student body was increasingly female. The college became a major place of education in the women's education movement and was the first university in Vermont to offer women degrees.

The Rutland and Washington Railroad reached West Poultney in 1851. This encouraged the continued growth of West Poultney . Increasingly more residents moved to West Poultney from East Poultney and the shops, churches, schools and the post office were also moved to West Poultney .

The Village Poultney was granted independent rights in 1908.

As early as 1977, the Poultney Central School was included in the National Register of Historic Places . It was followed in 1988 by the Poultney Main Street Historic District . The South Street Bridge, also known as Bridge 4 , which has been listed since 2009 , crosses the Poultney River in the south of the village.
