Hemisus guttatus is a species of amphibian in the Hemisotidae family.
features
The species reach a length of 46 millimeters. The top of the body is brown with round white spots. The body shape is compact. The head is small. The forehead is rather pointed, protruding and wedge-shaped. The crack in the mouth is small. The eyes are small. The interorbital space is wide. The limbs are short. Fingers and toes are short and webbed . The first and second fingers are the same length. Subarticular cusps are absent. The medial metatarsal cusp is small and not protruding in the shape of a scoop. With the hind leg laid forward, the tarsometatarsal joint extends to the eye. The skin is smooth. There is a transverse fold behind the eyes. Males have a subgular vocal sac .
Occurrence
Hemisus guttatus occurs in South Africa in the south of Mpumalanga and in the central and eastern KwaZulu-Natal between Hluhluwe in the north and Durban in the south. The species may also be native to neighboring Swaziland . The vertical distribution ranges from 0 meters on the coast to 1000 meters in the Lebombo Mountains . The habitat is grassland and savannah .
Systematics
The species was first described by Wilhelm von Rapp in 1842 .
