Dorset is a town in Bennington County of the state of Vermont in the United States with 2,031 inhabitants (according to the 2010 census).

Geographical location
Dorset is north of Bennington County in the Green Mountains . There are only a few rivers in the town. The Otter Creek flows through the eastern part of the town in a northerly direction. The Mettawee River also flows north through the western part . There are several smaller lakes on it. Like Prentiss Pond in the north. The Batten Kill, on the other hand, flows south. The area of the town is hilly and the highest point is Mount Aeolus, 980 m high .

history
The Grant for Dorset was awarded on August 20, 1761 as part of the New Hampshire Grants by Benning Wentworth . It comprised 26,240 acres (10,619 hectares ). The name goes back to Dorset in England. Settlement started in 1768 and the first settlers were Felix Powell, Isaac Lacey, Benjamin Baldwin, Abraham Underhill, John Manley, Jr., and George Page. The town's constituent assembly took place in 1769. In an epidemic in 1813, around 40 town residents died.
Marble was mined in Dorset from 1785. The first marble quarry was in South Dorset. Isaac Underhill founded it on the Reuben Bloomer floor. More than two dozen quarries have opened on the slopes of Dorset Mountain and Mount Aeolus. It was from these quarries that the marble for the New York Public Library , the Brown University Library , and the Memorial Continental Hall of the Daughters of the American Revolution came .

Economy and Infrastructure
traffic
US Highway 7 runs through east Dorset (north-south). It follows the course of the Otter Creek and Vermont State Route 30 , which also runs in a north-south direction, follows the course of the Mettawee River.
The Rutland – Hoosick Junction railway runs through Dorset, with stops in North and East Dorset.

There is no hospital in Dorset. The closest is the Rutland Regional Medical Center in Rutland.
education
Dorset is part of the Bennington-Rutland Supervisory Union with Danby, Langrove, Londonderry, Manchester, Mt. Tabor, Pawlet, Peru, Rupert, Sunderland, Weston and Winhall. In Dorset, The Dorset School offers classes from kindergarten through eighth grade.
The private Long Trail School also offers classes for students in grades six to twelve and prepares them for college.
The Dorset Village Library in Dorset is the local library for residents and offers an extensive program.
