Reginald Marsh (painter)
Reginald Marsh (born March 14, 1898 in Paris , † July 3, 1954 in Dorset , Vermont ) was an American painter of social realism ( New Objectivity ).
Life
Reginald Marsh's parents were the painters Alice Randall and Frederick Dana Marsh . He was a student and teacher at the Art Students League of New York . He was married to the painter Felicia Meyer Marsh for the second time .
Marsh is particularly known for paintings of the New York and Coney Islands of the 1930s and 1940s. His choice of topics was often shaped by sexuality and humor, including burlesque . He also took pictures in New York, his subjects included street scenes, Coney Island, beach scenes, the subway and the harbor.
Marsh died of a heart attack at the age of 56 .
Marsh's painting Two Dime cinema ( Twenty-Cent Movie , 1936) was among the 1,000 masterpieces presented.
In 2013, the New York Historical Society hosted the exhibition Swing Time: Reginald Marsh and Thirties New York , which was widely reviewed.
In 1946 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters .
